TSMC Protects Employee Heath; All Its 19 Fabs Secure ISO 45001 Certification
Four Key Improvements in Preventing Hazardous Risks in Workplace
TSMC proactively establishes a safe and healthy workplace. As of August 2019, the Company has accomplished the third party audits for its 15 wafer fabs and four backend packaging and testing fabs in Taiwan, successfully securing the certification of the latest ISO 45001 Occupational Safety and Health Management System.
Implementing International Standard of Occupational Safety and Health to Avoid Hazardous Risks in Workplace
Based on the practical experience in the past years, a comprehensive occupational safety and health management system can effectively prevent injuries and diseases in workplace, which has become the guideline of workplace safety. Back in 1996, TSMC poured resources to establish the occupational safety and health management system, and obtained many certifications such as ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. To link up with the global standard and enhance the occupational safety and health management, TSMC has put together efforts from different organizations since the second quarter of 2018, including factory safety and environmental protection, facility, learning center, quality laboratory, health center, and employee relationship. Under the leadership of the chairman, TSMC has been continually optimizing the system, conducting educational training, and strengthened the execution ability for improvement after risk evaluation. TSMC owns the most ISO 45001 certifications in Taiwan.
The latest ISO 45001 Safety and Health Management Regulation, published in March of 2018, is based on the PDCA infrastructure and revises the existing OHSAS 18001 regulation to expand the scope to support and participation of the leadership, collection and planning of internal and external issues, expectation and demand of stakeholders, evaluation of risk inspection, communication and consultation of non-managers, application of performance indicator, and evaluation of corrective and preventive action. Meanwhile, it ensures the spirit of the system can be effectively implemented into management level through management examination, internal audit, automatic check, and security patrol.
Four Key Improvements Help TSMC’s 19 Fabs Pass Certification
TSMC adopts four major measures to transfer into the ISO 45001 Occupational Safety and Health Management System. As of August this year, all the fabs in Taiwan have passed certification.
J.K. Lin, TSMC Senior Vice President of Information Technology and Materials Management & Risk Management, points out that “safety first” is the primary conception of occupational safety and health. TSMC focuses on active intervention and prevention from the source to create a zero-incident/zero-hazard workplace. In response to the continual improvement spirit of ISO 45001, TSMC will try to improve every year in the future, and will keep renew the target and performance of occupational safety and health. The Company will also actively reinforce the risk control of occupational safety and health to ensure the system can grow along with the corporation and protect health and safety of its employees.
