TSMC is committed to becoming a global benchmark in environmental sustainability. Following the establishment of an Environmental Monitoring Center at its Taiwan sites to control pollutant emissions and enhance the efficiency of pollution control equipment, the Company established its first overseas “Facility Environmental Laboratory” at TSMC (Nanjing), aimed at strengthening its autonomous monitoring capabilities. Guided by the three strategic pillars of “quality control, operational execution, and replication and promotion”, TSMC (Nanjing) launched an enhancement initiative for its environmental monitoring capacities. It has since become the first TSMC laboratory to obtain certification under the ISO/IEC 17025 international standard, and successfully passed the annual verification by the China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment (CNAS) in March 2025. The laboratory currently possesses testing capabilities for 27 emission indicators, exceeding the 24 indicators stipulated by local environmental regulations. Additionally, it has established a parameter database covering 129 exhaust ducts, and completed rectification work on five exhaust stacks that had exceeded internal emission standards. Overall assessments indicate that air pollutant emissions have been reduced by 61%, while the composite reduction rate of water pollution indicators has improved by 19% compared to levels prior to the laboratory’s establishment—demonstrating TSMC’s firm commitment to the effective implementation of its Environmental Policy.

Emission Source Tracing and Management: Enhancing Detection Efficiency

In alignment with its global expansion strategy, TSMC has been actively advancing environmental detection technologies at its overseas sites. In 2022, the Company established a Facility Environmental Laboratory at TSMC (Nanjing) to address the increasingly stringent local environmental regulations and the differences in testing methodologies compared to Taiwan. Since the local data cannot be directly benchmarked against Taiwan’s standards, TSMC launched an enhancement initiative in 2023 to comprehensively upgrade the laboratory’s testing capabilities and infrastructure

Beyond meeting regulatory requirements, the laboratory independently monitors 27 emission parameters and has expanded its scope to include emission source tracing and management. Testing has been extended from stack outlets to include production equipment, waste liquid tanks, and exhaust ducts from local scrubbers, enabling real-time monitoring of emission sources. Dedicated ducts have also been installed to collect arsenic-containing gases, preventing abnormal emissions. The laboratory is equipped with the flexibility to adjust testing locations as needed. This advancement has significantly improved efficiency, reducing the time required for analysis from one week (when outsourced) to just one day—an 86% improvement. These upgrades have greatly strengthened the site’s environmental monitoring and early warning capabilities.

TSMC (Nanjing) continues to enhance its facility environmental laboratory testing capabilities and optimize detection methods for low-concentration emission indicators. It has successfully improved chlorine detection technology, lowering the detection limit by 88% to identify lower concentrations of chlorine. In the future, TSMC (Nanjing) will further expand from in-factory detection to the development of boundary environmental monitoring technology to promote environmental sustainability and advance towards the goal of net-zero emissions.
