As TSMC expands its global footprint, it is actively supporting employees at all locations to engage with local communities and create shared value. In June, Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing, Inc. (JASM) partnered with the TSMC Education and Culture Foundation to support Taiwan’s OneSong Orchestra to perform in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. The concert themed "Sound from Formosa – With Gratitude, Connecting Kumamoto and Taiwan with Music" marks the foundation's first overseas arts and culture sponsorship, presenting a musical feast intertwining Taiwanese and Japanese cultures, and drew an audience of over 1,000.
I believe today's concert, organized by JASM and sponsored by the TSMC Education and Culture Foundation, is an important step towards deepening cultural exchange between Taiwan and Japan.
With the opening of JASM, Taiwan and Japan have not only strengthened their industrial ties, but can also look forward to further engagement in exchanges and mutual learning in the realms of culture, economy, and environmental sustainability.
Deepening Taiwan-Japan Exchanges with Local Support
The successful opening of JASM was a collective achievement supported by the local community. To deepen cultural exchange between Taiwan and Japan, JASM and the TSMC Education and Culture Foundation supported OneSong Orchestra’s performance in Kumamoto featuring a repertoire of Taiwanese folk classics such as "Rainy Night Flowers," Taiwanese pop songs, and Japanese folk songs. Taiwanese violinist Richard Lin, a winner of the Sendai International Violin Music Competition championship in Japan, was the soloist for "Taiwan Dreams in Golden Age for Violin & Orchestra." Featuring the Kumamoto Prefectural Daiichi High School Chorus as special guests, the chorus not only performed the Japanese folk song "Sakura" and “Moon over the Ruined Castle,” but also included a rendition of the Taiwanese classic "Small Town Story" sung in Mandarin Chinese, bringing a thrilling climax of cheers to the event.
OneSong Orchestra is honored to perform in Kumamoto, blending elements of Taiwanese music and culture into our performance. Special thanks to the members of the Kumamoto Prefectural Daiichi High School Chorus for their collaboration in promoting cultural exchange between Taiwan and Japan.
This concert allows us to once again appreciate the beauty of music; overcoming language barriers, we are here together because of music.
Establishing Local Connections to Promote Corporate Sustainability
JASM has been committed to community engagement since its establishment. The company supported charity basketball games featuring the Kumamoto professional basketball team "VOLTERS," where a portion of the games’ proceeds were donated to the restoration of Kumamoto Castle. JASM also supported employee fundraising for Noto Peninsula earthquake disaster relief. At the end of February this year, JASM joined the Kumamoto Industrial Revitalization EXPO 2024 and shared its green manufacturing practices, particularly its advanced water treatment systems, with nearly 1,500 visitors, including approximately 350 students. For future projects, JASM will prioritize environmental conservation and common good with the local community to act on its sustainable corporate values.
The "Sound from Formosa – With Gratitude, Connecting Kumamoto and Taiwan with Music" concert has bridged creative collaborations and community engagement across regions. TSMC and its subsidiaries actively align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and engages with a broad range of issues. They take tangible actions on sustainable strategies and promote social impact initiatives that enhance arts and culture development and facilitate cross-cultural exchanges, paving the way for a brighter future.
Today’s JASM is only possible with the strong support of the local community. Upholding our commitment to ESG, JASM will work alongside all Kumamoto residents to care for this land, utilizing 100% renewable energy, recycling water resources, and nurturing groundwater to become everyone's good neighbor.
