Biodiversity is one of Earth's most valuable assets. Guided by its Biodiversity Statement, TSMC is committed to fostering the coexistence of technology and nature. On May 22, 2025—International Day for Biological Diversity—TSMC celebrated the first anniversary of its "Eco Plus! Ecological Harmony Program" with the "Creating a Sanctuary for Endangered Species" event. TSMC officially announced that the ecological pond at Taichung site has been designated as a conservation site for the endangered Squalidus Banarescui. By implementing phased rescue and protection measures, TSMC is ensuring the species' survival. This endeavor represents the first instance of a Taiwanese company rehabilitating endangered species within its facility grounds. This achievement also underscores the collaborative success of the Taichung Ecological Network Memorandum of Understanding, which TSMC signed with the Taichung Branch, Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency, the Third River Management Branch, Water Resources Agency, Ministry of Economic Affairs, and the Agriculture Bureau of Taichung City Government. In May, TSMC also completed the initial review of its inaugural TSMC Biodiversity Scholarship and Proposal Grant, establishing a new milestone in supporting and cultivating talent with potential in ecological research and conservation.
Ecological conservation is a commitment that requires long-term dedication. Only through collaboration between industry, government, academia, and the public can we make meaningful progress one step at a time. TSMC is honored to be part of the effort to protect biodiversity and looks forward to working closely with all partners in the future to achieve the vision of mainstreaming biodiversity.
Diverse Conservation Initiatives, Fostering Sustainable Ecological Development
"Eco Plus! Ecological Harmony Program" serves as a crucial platform established by TSMC in collaboration with industry, government, academia, and research partners to nurture green sustainability. The program focuses on three aspects of biodiversity conservation and promotion: habitat, species, and knowledge. Since its launch in 2024, the program has actively advanced various initiatives. On the habitat front, TSMC has promoted leopard cat-friendly agricultural label and completed potential areas identification and priority assessments for optimizing the corridor of Dadu Mountain. Furthermore, the program has encouraged stakeholders to adopt Other Effective Conservation Measures (OECM) to facilitate stream-friendly management along the Fazih River. On the species conservation front, the program has tailored efforts to safeguard the endemic Squalidus Banarescui. Key actions include enhancing water quality and optimizing the ecological pond environment within the TSMC Taichung Site. Specific measures, such as adjusting crown cover, improving shoreline and water surface vegetation coverage, and implementing access controls to prevent invasive species, have successfully created an ideal living habitat for this rare fish species. Additionally, a conservation needs assessment for the Ring-necked Pheasant has been completed, and efforts are underway to locate suitable habitats to bolster conservation capacity, promoting population growth and stability for this iconic species.
Cultivating Talent to Support Biodiversity Mainstreaming
In the realm of knowledge empowerment, TSMC has partnered with the Ministry of Agriculture Taiwan Biodiversity Research Institute and the Taiwan Society of Plant Systematics to launch the inaugural TSMC Biodiversity Scholarship and Proposal Grant, which features three major awards—New Talent Award, Elite Award, Research Project Proposal Award—to encourage research and contributions related to ecological conservation. Additionally, TSMC has collaborated with the Taiwan Wild Bird Federation to expand the eBird Taiwan database. This partnership has resulted in completing survey area covering for 15.3% of Taiwan Bird Atlas project, adding recognition of 53 bird sounds to the Merlin App, and training 575 bird volunteers. Further advancing biodiversity awareness, TSMC has joined forces with the Ministry of Education and iNaturalist, fostering citizen scientist training nationwide. The initiative has engaged 224 schools and 2,783 users to utilize the platform for ecological research, integrating environmental conservation and scientific spirit into Taiwan’s education system. By cultivating environmental consciousness and action among the next generation, TSMC is laying the foundation for the mainstreaming of biodiversity in society.
The UN Biodiversity Conference (COP 15) adopted 23 global action targets for 2030, and corporate involvement in biodiversity conservation has become a prevailing global trend! Only through cooperation and action across the entire industry chain can we achieve meaningful change.
The Taichung Ecological Network Memorandum of Understanding represents a significant milestone in public-private sector collaboration. We have successfully promoted biodiversity conservation partnerships and look forward to creating an ecological protection network, ensuring that ecological restoration efforts go beyond isolated actions!
