TSMC places great importance on environmental sustainability, guided by its "Biodiversity Statement." The Company is dedicated to strengthening climate resilience through its Plant A Tree Program, which focuses on three main aspects—afforestation, plant restoration, and volunteer activities. To mitigate coastal erosion and airborne dust in coastal regions, TSMC has partnered with Taiwan’s Taichung City Government on an afforestation project near the Nanzhuang seawall in Da'an District. Covering approximately 2.834 hectares, this initiative involves planting a total of 44,850 coastal tree species. In February 2024, TSMC applied to the Ministry of Environment for the Voluntary Greenhouse Gas Reduction Project, utilizing the Ministry-approved "Afforestation and Reforestation Carbon Sink Project Activities" reduction methodology. This approach has been verified by a third-party inspection agency. In January 2025, the project received approval from the Ministry of Environment, making the first successful case in the country to achieve carbon sink registration through coastal afforestation. It is estimated that the project will generate approximately 1,011 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) carbon credits over the next 30 years, thereby deepening TSMC’s green impact.

Key Strategies for Implementing TSMC's Plant A Tree Program’s Three Pillars

TSMC Pioneers Taiwan’s First Coastal Afforestation Carbon Offset, Reducing Over 1,000 Tons of Emissions
Afforestation
  • Starting with TSMC’s three eco-parks located in the northern, central, and southern regions, the tree planting area will be gradually expanded. This initiative aims to reduce urban dust and enhance livability by planting trees and shrubs.
  • Trees will be planted in coastal areas to stabilize sand on the coastline and reduce airborne dust’s impact on the surrounding environment.
  • On over-cultivated hillsides land, trees will be planted to mitigate land exposure and soil erosion, while enhancing water conservation capabilities.

Plant Restoration
  • The promotion of ecological restoration in near-natural forests and rare plant areas is underway. By gradually connecting surrounding green belts, the abundance and diversity of Taiwan’s native plant species is being enhanced.

Volunteer Activities
  • In conjunction with important environmental and ecological festivals, TSMC have launched tree planting and beach cleaning activities along the western coast. Employees are encouraged to use their volunteer leave to participate with their families, fostering environmental awareness.

Optimizing Afforestation Methods to Enhance the Ecological Environment

Since March 2021, TSMC has been actively promoting its Plant A Tree Program, successfully planting 318,000 trees and 1.79 million shrubs across 86 locations in Taiwan’s Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Miaoli, Taichung, Yunlin and Tainan, covering a total of greening area of 55 hectares. Starting in 2022, the initiative shifted its focus to the coastal environment, beginning with the Nanzhuang seawall in Da'an District, Taichung. A baseline scenario survey was conducted to assess the impact of the strong northeast monsoon, which cause drifting sand accumulation and the inland migration of coastal sand dunes, adversely affecting local agriculture and daily life. Despite previous efforts to clear sand and plant trees, results were limited. In response, TSMC refined the installation methods for windbreak and sand-pile fences and adopted reforestation techniques using sand-pile fences and water-storing seedling pots to ensure stable growth of tree species. These measures not only effectively mitigates strong winds and sand drift but also improve the local ecological environment, attracting wildlife such as the oriental ring-necked plover and Taiwan hare, thereby restoring natural ecological diversity.

Three Phases of TSMC's Voluntary Greenhouse Gas Reduction Project

PhasesExecution Content

Phase One:

Assessment and Preparation

  • Identify applicable reduction methodologies approved by Taiwan’s Ministry of Environment and prepare project plans.
  • Determine qualified inspection agencies capable of conducting third-party inspections.

Phase Two:

Registration Application

  • Complete the voluntary reduction project plan and have the plan verified both in writing and on-site by the inspection agency.
  • Submit the registration application to the Ministry of Environment after verification.
  • Upon review and approval by the Ministry of Environment’s special task force, complete the voluntary reduction registration process.

Phase Three:

Application for Emission Reduction Quota

  • Execute the project according to the registered plan and calculate the emission reduction performance based on actual monitoring results.
  • Prepare a monitoring report, have it verified by the inspection agency and obtain approval from the Ministry of Environment to receive the reduction quota.

This coastal afforestation project is set to span 30 years. From 2022 to 2024, TSMC took the lead in new afforestation efforts, while also exchanging maintenance expertise with the Taichung City Government. Beginning in 2025, both parties will collaborate in managing and maintaining the project, conducting regular inspections to ensure a minimum plant survival rate of at least 70% to achieve the anticipated carbon reduction targets. In addition, in 2025, TSMC will continue to promote the "Good Sea with You" initiative, which involves tree planting and beach cleaning activities, and will expand the scope of these activities to include the Yunlin area for the first time. As of March, events have been successfully held at Jiangjun Coast in Tainan and Zhuoshui River in Lunbei, Yunlin. Upcoming activities are scheduled for Nanliao, Hsinchu, and Da'an Coast in Taichung in April and May, respectively. TSMC encourages employees to utilize their volunteer leave and invites their families to participate, fostering greater environmental awareness and contributing to sustainable development.
