TSMC Cooperates with EPA to Establish First Automated Waste Disposal Declaration Platform in the Industry
TSMC is committed to build a high standard life cycle management process of waste treatment, and takes responsibility for the outsourced cleaning, treatment and management of its waste. In 2020, TSMC worked with EPA to develop the first “Automated Waste Disposal Declaration Platform” in the industry. This platform, along with TSMC’s “GPS Satellite Fleet”, are forming a more instantaneous monitoring system for waste disposal cleaning. In the meantime, 16,000 man-hours and 240,000 sheets of printed paper are saved per year due to the automation of waste disposal declaration procedures. In addition, TSMC is taking a step further to lead the key waste treatment suppliers to introduce advanced technologies including image recognition, artificial intelligence, and big data extraordinary analysis into the management system. This intelligent detection system will replace manpower inspection. In order to block illegal waste disposal in all direction, TSMC also shares management experience with waste disposal contractors and encourages them to spread its experience to their cooperative business.
TSMC Waste Life Cycle Management Development Timeline

Automated Waste Disposal Declaration Platform + TSMC GPS Satellite Fleet Achieve High efficient Monitoring System in Life Cycle Management of Waste
According to the statistics from EPA, over 2 million waste disposal declaration forms were generated per year. Every declaration form is filled manually and time-consuming, and may have error or omission. In 2020, TSMC cooperated with EPA to establish the “Automated Waste Disposal Declaration Platform” through connecting internal and external API (Application Programming Interface). This platform integrates the operation of issuance, comparison, and confirmation of declarative data, saving 16,000 man-hours and 240,000 sheets of printed paper per year.
Based on the existing functions of vehicle trajectory, unusual stoppage and off-line detection on TSMC’s GPS Satellite Fleet System, TSMC added new functions of real time image feedback and extraordinary alert notice in 2020. Through the setup of two-way communication channel for waste disposal cleaning operation, disposal cleaning contractors may pass related document and feedback which create immediate, intact and automatic high efficiency waste disposal cleaning monitoring system.

Establish Face-to-Face Communication Channel with Contractors; Fulfill Waste Disposal Management Process
TSMC is obligated to share waste disposal management experience. In July of 2020, TSMC invited 77 waste disposal contractors to join our first “Waste Disposal Management Practice Forum” with a 100% attendance rate from contractors for liquid chemical and sludge wastes. In this Forum, TSMC reinforced waste disposal regulatory compliance, shared experience on waste disposal cleaning and common defects and improvements in waste treatment contractor audit. Meanwhile, TSMC encouraged contractors to spread our high standard life cycle management process to their customers. Through the two-way communication with contractors, the waste disposal management process was fulfilled, making all efforts to develop environment sustainability.
TSMC is a leading semiconductor company in the world. It has a very positive and outstanding performance in waste treatment and reduction, circular economy, and vendor audit and guidance. This time, actively developing automated waste disposal declaration platform with EPA is a pioneering move toward declaration automation.
TSMC continues to strengthen life cycle management of waste, and will lead the industry to set up a report system on Cloud for tracking waste recycling products in the fourth quarter of 2020. All waste liquid chemical and sludge recycling contractors are requested to report all their logistic records of recycling products. This Cloud report system will replace our traditional monthly reports on recycling products. At the same time, we are upgrading on-site treatment remote monitoring systems of six key contractors, and introducing advanced technologies including image recognition, artificial intelligence learning and big data extraordinary analysis. Through automatic detection and alert system for suspicious movement, we help contractors improve sustainability and fulfill the mission on green manufacturing.
