TSMC Works with Suppliers to Develop Chemical Material Packaging Cleaning Methodology to Improve Resource Recycling
Adhering to the principle of "minimizing waste, maximizing resource recycling, and optimizing supplier management", TSMC proactively implements circular economy through the reduction of raw material packaging. In addition to optimizing TSMC’s own product packaging, TSMC has worked with suppliers to enhance their raw material packaging recycling and reuse capability. For the first time in the advanced specialty chemicals industry, a customized cleaning methodology was developed to realize the reuse of drum packaging. As of April 2023, Fab 15B successfully completed implementation, with Fab 12B and Fab 18A undergoing verification. It is expected that after all 12-inch wafer fabs fully implement this methodology, it can reduce the carbon footprint by 2,000 metric tons per year, creating resource recycling value and promoting environmental sustainability.
Enhancement in Cleaning Technology to Realize the Recycling and Reuse of Drum Packaging
Advanced specialty chemicals demand high purity, high stability and high reaction selectivity. Thus their packaging material also requires good chemical stability. To prevent the residuals in the drum from contaminating subsequent batches, drum packaging was mainly single-use. TSMC regards the promotion of a green and low-carbon supply chain as one of the keys to sustainable operation, and the reduction and reuse of packaging is an effective environment friendly strategy. Since 2021, TSMC has worked with suppliers to co-develop the methodology required to reuse drum packaging, such as water-based cleaning agents that effectively remove residuals. Through repeated testing and fine-tuning of the parameters and processes of cleaning equipment while monitoring trace metal and particle after cleaning, the quality specifications of the recovered drum packaging are completely consistent with brand new ones. It is not only a breakthrough in the one-time use limit and achieve recycling benefits, but also strengthens suppliers’ packaging cleaning methodology and process management specifications, co-benefiting all parties in the industry.
Advanced Special Chemical Drum Packaging Recycling Process

Strengthening the sustainability and resilience of the supply chain is an indispensable part of TSMC's five ESG directions. TSMC strives to achieve its net zero emission target in 2050 by continuous development and verification of cleaning methodology for chemical drum packaging used in different advanced applications such as solvent-based cleaning agents and electroplating solutions, expanding the carbon reduction benefits.
